PIKOM Urges Cybersecurity To Be Core Business Strategy, Not An Afterthought

KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 23- PIKOM, the National Tech Association of Malaysia has called on organisations, sectors and the nation to build cybersecurity resilience as a core capability, not just a response to threats.

Its chairman, Alex Liew said this requires alignment between technology, policy and people. Cybersecurity must be embedded into business strategy from the start, not treated as an afterthought.

He pointed to a stark imbalance between attackers and defenders. On the attacker side, there is already collaboration, shared intelligence and AI working in their favour.

“Attackers already collaborate, they share intelligence, they use AI, they work as one. Defenders must do the same. We cannot work in silos.

“We need to share information, build a strong fortress, and not just defend, but one day, get ahead of them.” he said at the Future of Cybersecurity Summit 2026 here today.

Despite the challenges, he noted that Malaysia ranks highly in cybersecurity within the region,

“Sustaining that, will require stronger initiatives going forward,” he added.

Liew also commended the Government for introducing the Cybersecurity Act, saying it further strengthens protection for the country’s National Critical Information Infrastructure institutions.
