Kuala Lumpur, 16 April 2020 – The Salvation Army has extended its hand to distribute food rations to the most vulnerable during the Movement Control Order (MCO) implemented by the government, amidst the COVID-19 outbreak. With a presence in the Klang Valley, Melaka, Penang, Ipoh, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, The Salvation Army is actively delivering food parcels, cooked meals and other essentials to families who have been financially impacted by the global pandemic.

“When we realised that many in our community did not have enough to eat, we knew we had to reach out to them,” said Major Tan, Regional Officer of The Salvation Army in Malaysia. Echoing him, Melaka Team Leader, Envoy Roger said “Needless to say, the Covid-19 pandemic has brought our lives to a halt. We witnessed people not having meals for several days. Population groups such as the poor, older people, people with disabilities, the homeless and other vulnerable communities would be disproportionately harmed by this pandemic because most of them are daily wage earners, most of which have lost their jobs. But in all this, we are very grateful to our fellow Malaysians that have generously donated to help others”.

To-date, The Salvation Army has distributed 2,200 cooked meals and 115 food parcels that consist of rice, cooking oil, eggs, sardines and more. This week another 600 cooked meals will be delivered along with 200 food parcels to needy families.

A recipient of The Salvation Army’s food parcel, Poniyah, said “Kami sangat berterima kasih kepada The Salvation Army. Ini adalah pertama kali kami dapat bantuan makanan. Sebelum ini kami pernah meminta bantuan makanan tapi tiada orang balas. Apabila kami minta tolong dari Salvation Army, hari seterusnya mereka sudah datang tolong kami”.
