Mumbai, 20 FEBRUARY, 2017 – Malaysia’s medical travel sector, already a much sought- after choice in the Asian region, added another feather to its cap when one of its key drivers was honored recently at the international stage for her outstanding contributions to global healthcare.

Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC) Chief Executive Officer, Sherene Azli, joined the distinguished company of 50 women from all walks of life who were recognized and lauded as “Outstanding Women in Healthcare” at the World Health and Wellness Congress 2017, here last week.

Held at Taj Lands End, it is yet another global milestone for the fast growing Malaysian healthcare travel sector, and now with this recognition, one that has placed the country in the global spotlight.

A proud Sherene Azli with the award.

The Malaysian healthcare travel sector has seen tremendous growth over recent years, and Sherene’s presence in the midst of an outstanding and diverse group of women who are making a difference in global healthcare was to recognize her contributions and initiative towards driving Malaysia Healthcare to greater heights.

This win was a proud moment for the country, the healthcare travel sector, industry stakeholders and fellow Malaysians.  Her achievement was even made more special in the fact that from the 50 women, she was among only ten international recipients on stage.

“It is a privilege to receive this award. Malaysia ticks all the right boxes in providing top notch and innovative healthcare. The solid infrastructure in the end-to-end healthcare services were the extra edge needed to put us ahead. This award recognizes MHTC’s work in promoting Malaysia as a preferred destination for healthcare travel and is a much-needed boost to work harder and achieve our aim of becoming number one in the world”, commented Sherene.

Malaysia is the holder of the “Medical Travel Destination of the Year” award for the second year running by the International Medical Travel Journal (IMTJ) for its dedication to being highly competitive and affordable.

Its cutting-edge treatments that are on par with other countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia and Japan, at 60 to 80 per cent of the cost, were prime considerations for the award.

Revenue from Malaysia’s healthcare travel has exceeded RM1 bil in 2016, and Malaysia Healthcare estimates one million healthcare travellers to Malaysia this year, contributing up to RM5bil to the total gross domestic product.

Its prime market are travellers from the ASEAN region, but Malaysia Healthcare has also seen steady growth with visitors from China and India.

Health, Wellness and Fitness are all inter-related industries taken into consideration in the Congress this year. Delegates from all over the world in various sectors, including hospitality, tourism, health and wellness, beauty, finance, medical, manufacturing and technology, are united by a common interest to propel global economic development as well as understanding the health and wellness industries better.

At the Congress, Sherene was part of a panel to discuss “Access and Quality of Healthcare Services: Disparities and Inequities”.

She was joined along with other prominent leaders in the healthcare industry such as Sasa Bozic, Owner and Executive Wellness Coach of Sasa Consulting, Slovenia; and Teressa Siu, an award winning Hong Kong journalist who specializes in Wellness and Health, to name a few.
