Kuala Lumpur, 19 February 2021 – Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) lauded the government’s unveiling of the MyDigital initiative as well as the appointment of the group as the only home-based cloud service provider (CSP), alongside Microsoft, Google and Amazon.
In a statement, it said its global network of more than 20 submarine cable systems is ready to support the global connectivity demand of MyDigital.
“We would like to congratulate the government on the comprehensive MyDIGITAL — the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint to accelerate the nation’s digital enablers towards a technologically-advanced economy by 2030.
“It is a holistic approach encompassing digital connectivity (fibre and 5G), digital infrastructure (cloud and cybersecurity) as well as digital skill sets and talents, towards making life and business easier for Malaysians as a connected nation. TM is ready and excited to play a significant part in this accelerated journey,” said TM managing director and group chief executive officer Imri Mokhtar.
The group also supports the formation of the 5G special purpose vehicle (SPV), which it said would allow TM to focus on bringing in next generation services to its customers via unifi and TM ONE.
It said it will be able to accelerate its convergence offerings to its 2.6 million home customers and 400,000 SMEs and micro businesses.
Separately, Amazon Web Services (AWS) also expressed gratitude for its appointment as a CSP.
“We are pleased to be selected to join the Cloud Service Provider Panel for the government of Malaysia by the Malaysian Administrative Modernization and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU).
“We continue to focus on listening to our customers’ needs in Malaysia and inventing on their behalf. We’re ready to support the government of Malaysia in their vision to transform the nation into a digital economy,” said Tan Lee Chew, AWS managing director, worldwide public sector, ASEAN.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the government had granted conditional approvals for Microsoft, Google, Amazon and TM to build and manage hyper-scale data centres as well as for the provision of hybrid cloud services.
The government has also proposed to appoint three local ICT companies — Enfrasys Solutions Sdn Bhd, Prestariang Systems Sdn Bhd and Cloud Connect Sdn Bhd — as managed service providers (MSPs) to work with the CSPs to manage CSP services for public-sector agencies in order to strengthen the capabilities of local companies.
