- 10 free electric vehicle (EV) charge points at selected Petronas stations, 55 more by year end
- Step to encourage more Malaysians to go electric and do their bit for the environment
- 45% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions targeted by 2030
Kuala Lumpur, March 9, 2017: Getting used to the idea of driving electric cars wouldn’t be such a bad idea now, truthfully.
More so when considering the fact that the Government has ambitious plans for all newly registered private cars to go fully electric in just 13 years time.
Electric car owners can now ‘Go Green’ without having to burn a hole in their pocket as Petronas is offering free electric vehicles (EV) charging at selected petrol stations located at every major highway.
The National oil company officially launched its ‘ChargEV’ facilty at the Solaris Petronas station in Serdang, today, one of 10 offered across the country.
Another 55 charging points will be installed by end of the year, Petronas Dagangan Bhd (PDB) chief executive officer and managing director Mohd Ibrahimnuddin Mohd Yunus said.
“ChargEV is a publicly accessible EV charging station network aimed at encouraging more Malaysians to switch to EVs,” he said at the launch by Energy, Green Technology and Water (KeTTHA) Minister Datuk Seri Maximus Ongkili.
This effort by Petronas is in collaboration with Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (GreenTech Malaysia), helmed by its group CEO Ahmad Hadri Haris.
“This effort is also in line with our aim to reduce Malaysian carbon footprint as electric cars have zero carbon emissions and work on renewable resources,” Ibrahimnuddin said.
He said besides the one launched today, the other charging points are located at Petronas Solaris Putra, NKVE Damansara, NKVE Subang, ELITE Bukit Jelutong, West and East KESAS, Genting Sempah, South-bound Ayer Keroh and Batu Tiga, Federal Highway.
In addition, the ‘one convenient stop’ concept allows the public to access Petronas multiformed facilities while charging their EVs.
“The public can also shop at Mesra convenient store, have their meals in F&B stores at Petronas stations while charging their vehicles,” said Ibrahimnuddin.
Ongkili, meanwhile, said that the move would facilitate Malaysia’s transition towards sustainable mobility and improve overall air quality.
“Malaysia targets a 45 per cent reduction of greenhouse gas emission intensity by 2030 which is also under the Electric Mobility Blueprint (EMB).”
“This is in line with Electric Mobility Plan and the ministry’s green technology plan which targets that by 2030, 100% of new registrations for privately owned vehicles is made up of hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles,” added Ongkili.
He stated that the government plans to install over 25,000 EV charging station all over Malaysia by that time.
