Pengerang, Johor, 20 January 2017 – PETRONAS today successfully installed two modularised furnaces for its refinery currently under construction at the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), here.
“The two furnaces, commonly known as crude heaters, are important components of the crude distillation unit within the refinery, and critical in providing feed for other process units of the refinery,” said PETRONAS Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhd (PRPC), Ir Dr Colin Wong Hee Huing.
“The successful installation of these two identical crude heaters signifies another important milestone in the overall development of the PIC which is poised for successful start-up in the first quarter of 2019,” he added.
“This certainly symbolises a good start for 2017, as we usher in the Year of the Fire Rooster. Similar to the rooster, with utmost discipline welcoming every dawn with its crow, we work together to fastidiously deliver the success of the PIC development.”

The crude heaters, codenamed F-001 A and B, were constructed at Liantong facility in Ningbo, China. Each weighs about 1,000 tonnes and has a processing capacity of 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) respectively.
These two crude heaters are also the biggest heaters that ever landed on Malaysia’s shores.
Present to witness the installation were Sinopec Engineering Incorporation President and Chief Executive Officer, Madam Sun Lili; Pengerang Local Authority President, Tuan Haji Bukhari Abdul Rahman; and Johor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Deputy Director, Encik Ibrahim Abdul Rahman.
At the ceremony, Ir Dr Colin Wong also expressed thanks to all parties involved for the continuous support in the development of the PIC.
Upon completion, PIC’s refinery will have a refining capacity of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd).
