KUALA LUMPUR, 21st November 2019 – PETRONAS and E-Idaman were awarded the prestigious GeoInnovation Awards today at a high-level senior leader gathering at Sofitel KL Damansara. The award, conferred only to select organisations every year, serves to recognise organisations for their forward-thinking approach in addressing real-world challenges in industries and communities.

PETRONAS was recognised for its GIS application (PiriGISTM) as a visualization tool for Pipeline Asset Management while E-Idaman Sdn Bhd (EISB) was lauded for the implementation of an E-Bin Form and E-Cage Maintenance system aimed at helping the company not only cut costs but also protect the environment.

“Our winners and their award-winning projects are proof that geospatial is becoming a way of life,” Esri Malaysia CEO CS Tan said during the awarding ceremony.

“The use of geospatial technology has enabled these organisations to see what others can’t and solve problems in smarter and innovative ways,” he said.

EISB – co-owned by MTD Group and Cenviro Sdn Bhd – was established in 2004 to undertake the waste management business in Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis. The implementation of the E-Bin Form directly results in the use of less paper, which saves the environment whilst also reducing the loss of hardcopy data. The launch of the E-Cage Maintenance system identifies the number of 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) wire-mesh cages for management, and determines their conditions for maintenance cost decisions amongst other functions.

“Through the use of geospatial technology, EISB has seen a marked improvement in time management, better cost-saving and lesser human error in its operations,” Mr Tan said.

Meanwhile, PETRONAS has been a long-time user of geospatial technology in its operations. The company considers their award-winning GIS application (PiriGISTM) as a visualization tool for Pipeline Asset Management in terms of integration of high resolution imagery & video, live operational data from SCADA and monitoring of geo-hazard threats which provides decision-makers with greater awareness of every part of their business chain, especially for engineering, operations and maintenance.

“Using geospatial technology has helped PETRONAS achieve more seamless workflows, a significant boost in productivity, greater collaboration and faster decision-making. Their forward-thinking approach in digital transformation sets a standard in the industry and a benchmark for others to follow.”

“On behalf of the wider Esri community around the world, we would like to congratulate PETRONAS and E-Idaman for their successful achievements. We are honoured to have been part of their inspiring journey and we are excited to see how they will continue to harness geospatial technology to address real-world challenges in their organisations,” he added.

GeoInnovation 2019 winners:

Petroliam National Berhad (PETRONAS)

Project Name: GIS application (PiriGISTM) as a visualization tool for Pipeline Asset Management

Overview: PETRONAS uses GIS widely comprising work in exploration, development, production, operations, engineering and facilities, as well as maintenance and monitoring. Through GIS, all these business functions and its data are integrated and viewed through a single mapping or visualization tool.

The project: GIS application (PiriGISTM) as a visualization tool for Pipeline Asset Management in terms of integration of high-resolution imagery & video, live operational data from SCADA and monitoring of geo-hazard threats provides decision-makers with greater awareness of every part of their business chain, especially for engineering, operations and maintenance.

The results: PETRONAS partnership with ESRI Malaysia has seen a more effective and efficient way to support the Technical team and where decision-making is concerned, issues are raised on-point and brought to the attention of the management team in timely manner.

E-Idaman Sdn Bhd (EISB)

Project name: E-Bin Form, E-Cage Maintenance

Overview: EISB is jointly owned by MTD Group and Cenviro Sdn Bhd to oversee the waste management business in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia, particularly Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak. EISB, currently operates its non-concession area of businesses like recycling, composting and landfill management. It covers 13 local authorities, more than 300,000 premises and 6,000 workers under its operations. EISB is embarking on a collaboration with three other Perak local authorities in an expansion project.

The project:

 >> E-Bin Form

Results:

  1. Reduce of paper usage to save the environment based on 300,000 Premises in Kedah and Perlis.
  2. Reduce of data loss from hardcopy form.
  3. Reduce or zero duplicate submission bin form.

>> E-Cage Maintenance

Objectives:

  1. To identify the number of cages for management.
  2. To identify cages’ condition for management to decide on cost for maintenance.
  3. To identify whether the cage was stolen at the location.

The challenges in implementing projects:

EISB attests to issues like return-on-investment management for funding, hesitation by managers who are risk-averse to high-technology projects, a resistance to the use of technology and a resistance to start sharing information between divisions and agencies.

The results: Through the use of geospatial technologies, there has been a marked improvement in time-management in EISB’s operations. It only takes less than one minute to fill the online form to input data into the database system, as opposed to the conventional two to three months for hardcopy records. EISB also claims the use of technology has enabled cost-saving, seeing less manpower cost where data input is required and in doing so, lesser human error, the reduction of duplicated data, and an easier way to track work progress.
