KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 – The government has yet to decide on the artificial intelligence (AI) chip to be used for Malaysia’s planned Sovereign AI Cloud, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said today.

Asked about the matter at the sideline of M360 ASEAN 2026 conference here, Fahmi said there was no decision yet.

“Not yet. There is no decision at this time,” he said.

The RM2 billion Sovereign AI Cloud will be developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to strengthen Malaysia’s data sovereignty and AI capabilities as the country works towards becoming an AI nation by 2030, according to Budget 2026.

Fahmi had previously said the Sovereign AI Cloud would strengthen the security of strategic national data, with MCMC implementing it under the guidance of the National Security Council, the Digital Ministry and the Department of Digital. He said it would be a key pillar in protecting government data and sensitive information from cyber threats while ensuring the country’s digital governance remained sovereign.

Meanwhile, in his speech, Fahmi said more than 65,000 online items remained on platforms after MCMC requested their removal, despite a 93 per cent platform compliance rate.

From Jan 1, 2025 to Aug 31, 2026, MCMC made 1,000,696 content removal requests, of which 935,416 items were taken down. The removals included 592,695 gambling related items and 227,486 scam related items.

“Yet a 93 per cent compliance rate still leaves more than 65,000 (65,280) items that were not taken down following MCMC’s requests.

“Even with a relatively high compliance rate, tens of thousands of potentially harmful items can remain accessible to users. This underscores why platform responsiveness, accountability and stronger preventive safeguards remain critical,” he said.

On scams, Fahmi said the government had set up a special working committee, which had held several discussions, and he would bring a Cabinet note on the matter in the near future.
