Kuala Lumpur, 1 September 2020 – FastJobs Malaysia (“FastJobs”), award-winning tech-driven job platform, partners with FWD Takaful Berhad (“FWD Takaful”) to provide low-cost takaful coverage to FastJobs’ gig jobseekers for as low as RM31 per month.
This collaboration between the tech-driven job platform and the takaful operator is first-of-its-kind in Malaysia and is in line with the Government’s National Economic Recovery Plan or PENJANA that aims to promote the country’s gig economy and provide a social safety net for gig workers who are mostly independent contractors, online platform workers, contract firm workers, on-call workers, and temporary workers.
Under this initiative, both partners aim to educate Malaysians, especially the youth who are employed as blue- collar and entry-level workers, on the importance and benefits of takaful protection. They also hope to extend takaful benefits and protection to gig workers that are usually offered to those with full-time employment only. Most importantly, both FastJobs and FWD Takaful would like to provide easy access to online hospital cash income plan to this group of beneficiaries at an affordable price.
The complimentary takaful protection, FWD MedSecure Direct (Plan 250), will be offered to first 2,000 FastJobs’ jobseekers for a campaign duration of two (2) months. The plan provides cash allowance during hospitalisation and is offered to Malaysians aged 17 to 60 years old.
Joelle Pang, FastJob’s General Manager said: “Our joint alliance with FWD Takaful will simultaneously provide our entry-level and non-executive jobseekers with access to equal job opportunities and social safety protection that will enhance their quality of life. Post the COVID-19 pandemic, technology is providing businesses with more flexible ways to meet consumer demand via the gig economy. As for Malaysian workers in this economic
category, they are looking for work opportunities that offer greater variety and, more importantly, security which is no less different from workers who are in full-time employment.”
“We are confident that this takaful awareness initiative will help maximise the country’s productivity rate and further solidify Malaysia’s aim of transitioning into an advanced economy of shared prosperity in view that 26 percent (or 4 million) of the total 15.3 million Malaysian workforces are freelancers,” added Joelle.
Wan Ahmad Najib Wan Ahmad Lotfi, FWD Takaful’s Chief Strategy & Digital Distribution Officer, said: “The initiative intends to support the Government’s efforts to protect Malaysia’s gig workers during these extraordinary times. Freelancers, particularly gig workers, don’t get enough support, unlike full-time workers who receive many benefits such as the Employees’ Provident Fund, financial safety, pensions, insurance coverage, and others. We believe that freelancers should be able to continue doing the work they love while staying protected and we hope that they can continue to live without hesitation, knowing that FWD Takaful has got them covered.”
“Our collaboration with FastJobs will help us to expand our takaful awareness initiative by educating Malaysians, especially the younger jobseekers from the blue-collar workforce on the benefits of takaful protection. Our aim is to change the way people feel about takaful, and we strive to continuously innovate our products to meet the evolving needs of our gig economy workers.”
