Kuala Lumpur, 8 July 2020 – The government is targeting at least RM513 million in sales from major retail and online segments from this year’s Buy Malaysia Campaign that runs from July until the end of this year.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said the campaign, which was launched today, would assist in reviving the nation’s economy, especially for local entrepreneurs affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“If the campaign succeeds, and I am convinced that it will succeed, it will help local entrepreneurs since their products and services will be promoted during this campaign.

“That is the main reason for this campaign. We should devise a strategy that will assist them in continuing their businesses. We do not want them to lose their businesses,” he told reporters after the launch of the campaign in partnership with Shopee Malaysia here today.

The strategic partnership, which returned for the second year on the platform, will help promote the effectiveness of the campaign with five times offerings compared to that of last year, where the average daily order of Malaysian-made products on the platform increased by 330 per cent.

The campaign consists of products, including groceries, health and beauty, fashion, household necessities, games, automotive products, including spare parts, accessories and motorbikes, as well as from the services sector such as food and beverage deals.

In addition, Nanta emphasised on the importance of strengthening public-private partnerships with online marketplaces to accelerate digitalisation and making sure that no entrepreneurs, especially small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs), would not be left behind.

He said both sectors played a role in addressing the challenging economic climate by reinforcing the government’s strategies and offering practical solutions that would benefit Malaysian businesses and consumers alike.

In conjunction with the event today, Shopee Malaysia also unveiled its new in-app portal known as ‘Buy Malaysia’ to put the spotlight on ‘Made in Malaysia’ products, as well as local businesses.

The in-app portal, which features the Jalur Gemilang, that can be easily spotted on the homepage of both the Shopee App and website.

In addition to the exposure given to local sellers, Shopee Malaysia, in partnership with the public sector, will provide special weekly discounts, ‘cashback’ and free shipping vouchers to encourage Malaysians to spend with local sellers and more so, on locally produced items.
