PUTRAJAYA, Sept 15 – DAP national chairman Gobind Singh Deo today urged the Attorney-General (AG) to explain the grounds for halting part of the prosecution against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said the matter was significant given that the legal proceedings had been actively ongoing, and that the public deserved to know what had changed in an active, high-profile case.
“AG must provide a detailed explanation over his decision to seek a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) and discontinue part of the prosecution against Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin which resulted in his acquittal on four charges in court today,” he said in a statement.
Gobind’s call came after the former prime minister was acquitted of four charges in court today, following the AG’s decision to discontinue that part of the case.
When criminal charges are brought against anyone, he said, the standard expectation is that the prosecution has thoroughly evaluated the evidence and established a strong basis to proceed.
“The public is entitled to know what specific material factors or legal considerations changed to prompt the decision to halt the process at this stage,” he said.
Gobind said transparency was essential given the significant public interest surrounding the case. He warned that confidence in the AG and in the criminal justice system would be heavily eroded if high-profile prosecutions were discontinued midway without clear justification and a full public explanation.
“I therefore call upon the AG to speak up and publicly outline the exact grounds that led to the said application he made in court today,” he said.
